Canasta Rules

Canasta is a partnership melding game played with two decks and the jokers. Teams race to complete "canastas" — seven cards of the same rank.

👥 2–6 players ⏱ 1–2 hrs 🎯 Difficulty ●●●●○ 🃏 Rummy & Melding

Setup

Two 52-card decks plus jokers, four players in two partnerships, 11 cards each. Wild cards are the jokers and the twos.

How to Play

Draw two cards, meld sets of three or more of a rank (7+ with wilds is a "canasta"), and discard. You may pick up the discard pile if you can immediately meld its top card.

Freezing

A discard pile with a wild or a 3 on top is "frozen" — it can only be taken with a natural pair in hand, which protects it.

Scoring

Natural canasta 500, mixed 300, red 3s 100 each. First team to 5000 wins. Going out requires at least one canasta.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many decks are used in Canasta?

Two standard 52-card decks plus four jokers.

What is a canasta?

A meld of seven cards of the same rank. A natural canasta (no wilds) is worth 500 points.

What does freezing the pile mean?

Discarding a wild card or a red 3 freezes the pile so opponents can only take it with a natural pair of the top rank.
