War Rules

War is the simplest card game there is — no decisions, no strategy, just luck. Two players split the deck and flip cards until someone owns all 52.

Setup

Shuffle a full 52-card deck and deal it out so each player has 26 cards, face-down in a stack. Players do not look at their cards.

How to Play

Both players flip their top card simultaneously. The higher card wins and collects both, placing them at the bottom of their stack. Aces are high.

War (ties)

When the two cards match in rank, players go to war: each places three cards face-down and one face-up. The higher face-up card wins all ten cards. If it ties again, war repeats.

Winning

The player who collects all 52 cards wins. Games can run long, so many players cap the number of wars or play until someone runs low.

Strategy

There is no real strategy — the outcome is pure chance. To speed up play, some variants have players surrender two cards each in a war instead of three.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a game of War take?

A full game can take 10–30 minutes depending on how many wars occur. It is entirely luck-driven.

Can War be played with more than two players?

Yes — deal the deck evenly to three or four players. Everyone flips at once; the highest card wins the pile, and all tied players go to war.

What happens when a player runs out of cards mid-war?

That player plays their remaining cards face-up; if they still lose, they are out and the winner takes the pile.
